CHAPTER FIFTEEN

KAGE

I study Sydney’s face beneath the moonlight, my heart skipping a beat.

She’s so fucking beautiful.

So goddamn perfect.

Everything she did tonight, every reaction, every word, made me fall just a little bit more for her.

Judge actually looked at me with pity toward the end because he knew there was no way I would be letting this girl go now. Not after the way she reacted in that simulation.

Two others underwent a similar experience, except not with all the historical theatrics my brother threw in for Sydney.

The other two were just strapped to a chair in a room that went up in flames while their peers ridiculed them and demanded they answer question after question in order to be freed.

Afterward, each of them was warned not to share their experiences. They were only allowed to comment on how important truth is in this game. “We don’t want to spoil the experience for the others,” the voice told everyone else. “We need them to feel the realness of the situation, just as you did, in order for this to be fair.”

The same was said to Griffin just before he reentered the theater.

And everyone reacted similarly by saying that it wouldn’t be a problem, because they wanted the others to suffer just like they had.

We didn’t bother having the simulation say those words to Sydney.

Mostly because the experience was unique to her.

The fire simulation is one we intend to use to punish those who killed our parents. To make them experience the pain of being burned alive while cuffed to a chair.

And the agony of hearing their children scream from above.

I didn’t put Sydney through this to punish her, though. I wanted her to understand. To experience the pain of our loss. To comprehend our need for revenge.

She wasn’t ready to hear the reasoning yet. That much was evident by her agony after the simulation ended. Rather than grab her and force her to hear me, I gave her space.

Only to find her curled in a ball on her balcony, shivering beneath the stars.

The exertion of the mental exercise must have knocked her out because she somehow fell asleep like this. “Poor little dove,” I whisper, bending to pick her up. She immediately curls into my chest, seeking my warmth. But her eyes don’t open.

She’s exhausted.

And still wearing her clothes from today.

I carry her inside and to her room, then I strip her while she sleeps.

She doesn’t react at all.

Just continues to shiver.

I take off my dress shirt and wrap it around her. She immediately snuggles into the warm fabric and sighs, making my lips twitch.

“One night together and you’re already addicted,” I say, amused by her instinctual reactions to me. I slide into the bed beside her and pull her into my arms. “It’s okay,” I whisper against her ear. “I’m just as addicted to you, sweet girl.”

She nuzzles my chest and cuddles into me like she did the pillow earlier.

I run my fingers through her hair and hold her, allowing her to absorb my warmth.
